I don’t hear many people identify themselves as “liberals.” I think the term became synonymous with four letter words in the mid to late 80’s and never recovered. People still associate “tax and spend” with being a liberal – which is kinda funny when you think about. All countries tax and spend – it’s the nature of government, for better or for worse. But what if we taxed and spent on military hardware and servicemen and went to a fully funded war – would that equate to a “liberal?”
New Republicans, from what I’ve seen also spend like drunken sailors, to borrow a phrase from John McCain (man I miss him – the 2000 version, not the 2008-present version) – anyway, I digress. Republicans spend with the best of them, but instead of actually bringing in the dollars, we put it all on credit cards, borrowing from the best bank in the world – the Government of China – think China has a budget deficit? Just saying…
Conservatives on the other hand – they LOVE to self-identify: “I’m a conservative!” Often spoken with a twinge of self-pride. They are so certain in their ideology, and it helps when you get all your news from FOX. You literally feel better about yourself, and angry at everyone else that wants your money – after all, we’ve been taught, the government is way to incompetent to spend your money wisely – it’s so much better if you keep your money and government does the least possible harm – which explains Airport Security, Food and Drug Administration, the Security and Exchange Commission and why after nine years we can’t seem to find Osama bin Ladin. Maybe, I’m going out on a limb here, maybe government is incompetent because we keep nominating and electing dumb and dumberer representatives – and it’s not like you can even blame them – they tell you up front that Washington sucks and shouldn’t be allowed to run anything and it’s their job to make sure it’s so! Wow! We are one stupid country!
So anyway, back to defining the terms – let’s try a quiz and see where you fall on the spectrum. Feel free to share the results 🙂
